Hi Lykkers, have you ever looked at the Matterhorn and wondered what it would take to get closer to that famous pyramid-shaped summit?
Rising 4,478 meters above Zermatt, this landmark is one of the most recognizable peaks in the Swiss Alps.
We can enjoy its scenery without climbing, but reaching the summit requires technical experience, good fitness, careful timing, and suitable equipment.
Let’s plan our trip with practical details, including transport prices, mountain hut costs, opening times, accommodation, meals, training, and useful tips.

Matterhorn

Where is the Matterhorn? How do we get there?

The Matterhorn stands above Zermatt, a car-free mountain town in Switzerland. We normally reach Zermatt by train, then use local mountain transport to access the surrounding slopes.
From Zermatt to Schwarzsee:
• Cable car: approximately $44–$74 return, depending on the season.
• July–August return fare: about $74.
• May–June and September–October: about $67.
• Travel time: roughly 20 minutes.
Schwarzsee is the usual starting point for the walk toward Hörnli Hut. A guided hike costs from about $175 per person, excluding the cable-car ticket, food, and drinks.

Hörnli Hut: Prices and Opening Hours

Hörnli Hut sits at about 3,260 meters and serves as the main base for the Swiss Matterhorn route. It generally operates during the summer climbing season, from late June through late September, depending on mountain conditions.
Accommodation:
• Dormitory bed: approximately $190 per person.
• Private suite for two: approximately $630.
• Breakfast and dinner are included.
• Sleeping-bag liner: about $54.
• Check-in: from 2:00 PM.
• Check-out: by 8:30 AM.
Because the number of beds is limited, booking ahead is important.
Restaurant:
• Open 7 days a week during the operating season.
• Hot meals: generally 11:00 AM–3:00 PM.
• Traditional Swiss dishes and vegetarian choices are available.
• Restaurant meals do not require an advance reservation.

What Does the Climb Require?

The Matterhorn is a technical alpine climb with sections of rock, snow, and ice. We need previous experience on steep mountain terrain, comfortable movement in climbing boots, and experience using crampons and climbing equipment.
A qualified mountain guide is recommended for the summit. We should also allow several days for preparation and acclimatization rather than treating this as an ordinary hike.
For additional high-altitude training, Breithorn reaches 4,164 meters. Guided outings start from around $300, depending on the arrangement and group size.

Best Time to Visit

The main climbing period generally runs from early July to mid-September, although the actual schedule depends on snow, weather, route conditions, and guide availability.
July–August:
• Main summer climbing period.
• Cable-car fares are higher.
• Zermatt can be busy.
• Mountain accommodation should be booked early.
Early July and late August to mid-September:
• Potentially quieter periods.
• Weather and route conditions can change quickly.
• Extra days are useful when planning a summit attempt.
For sightseeing and hiking without climbing, summer also offers convenient access to many mountain areas around Zermatt.

Other Mountain Tickets

Matterhorn Glacier Paradise:
• Return ticket from Zermatt: about $132 in July–August.
• May–June and September–October: about $120.
• The journey reaches one of the highest cable-car destinations in the Alps.
Schwarzsee:
• Return ticket: about $74 in July–August.
• About $67 in May–June and September–October.
These options allow us to enjoy impressive views without taking on the demanding summit route.

Accommodation and Dining Budget

Zermatt offers a wide range of places to stay.
• Budget accommodation: around $100–$220 per night.
• Mid-range hotel: around $220–$400 per night.
• Higher-end properties: $400+ per night during busy periods.
For meals, we can plan around $20–$35 per person for a simple meal, $35–$60 for a mid-range restaurant, and $70–$100+ for a higher-end dinner. Mountain-hut meals can also cost more because supplies need to be transported to high elevations.

Travel Tips

• Reserve Hörnli Hut well before the climbing season.
• Check cable-car schedules before leaving Zermatt.
• Allow extra days for changing mountain conditions.
• Bring sturdy footwear, warm layers, gloves, rain protection, and sun protection.
• Carry enough water and snacks for mountain outings.
• Use a qualified guide for the technical summit route.
• If we mainly want scenery, Schwarzsee and Matterhorn Glacier Paradise are easier choices.

Why Visit the Matterhorn?

The Matterhorn gives us several ways to enjoy the Swiss Alps. We can explore Zermatt, ride to Schwarzsee, hike toward Hörnli Hut, enjoy mountain meals, or prepare for the much more demanding summit route.
The best plan depends on our experience, schedule, and goals. Lykkers, would you rather hike beneath the Matterhorn, stay overnight at Hörnli Hut, or prepare for the full summit experience?
