Choose Your Starting Point

The full Bernina Express trip from Chur to Tirano takes about four hours and includes the Albula section, with the Landwasser Viaduct among its landmarks. Starting in the Engadin gives you a shorter outing: the ride from St Moritz to Tirano takes around two hours and fifteen minutes. Pontresina is another practical base for reaching the Bernina line without beginning the day in Chur.

Keep the railway geography in mind when comparing tickets. An Engadin departure still gives access to the high Bernina scenery, but it does not include every landmark on the Chur route. Pick a departure that matches the sights you care about, then check the return. For a late-autumn visit, look carefully at engineering notices, because some Chur services are diverted away from the usual Albula route.

The Bernina Express panoramic carriage also requires a paid seat reservation in addition to the travel ticket. A rail pass may cover the fare without covering that supplement, so compare the complete cost before deciding that one booking is cheaper than another.

Regional trains offer a different experience on the same Bernina tracks. You can travel without a compulsory panoramic supplement, and optional reservations on eligible regional services cost about US$6 per person. This suits travelers who prefer to break the ride into stages, although crowded departures may involve waiting. Check ticket validity and the timetable for each stage rather than assuming any reservation permits unlimited changes along the line.

Pause Around Lago Bianco

Near Ospizio Bernina, the railway reaches about 2,253 meters above sea level. Lago Bianco sits in this open high-altitude setting, with a very different feel from the wooded approaches lower down. If you want time outside, build an intentional stop around a regional service. A brief station pause during a through ride is not a substitute for an independently planned walk.

In warmer months, check the condition of the lakeside paths before choosing your distance. In snowy conditions, do not assume that a summer walking route remains suitable or that the lake surface is safe to cross. A short look from an accessible permitted area may be enough. Bring a warm layer even when the valley feels mild, and keep the next departure time handy so the stop remains relaxed.

Stay in Pontresina

Hotel Bernina Pontresina offers a village base, with selected autumn double-room rates starting around US$276 per night for two, including taxes and fees. It is within walking distance of the main station, although travelers with heavy bags may prefer a transfer. Parking adds approximately US$18 nightly. Staying in the village makes sense if you want meals and a stroll after the railway outing rather than another long connection.

Hotel Steinbock is another Pontresina option, with autumn double-room examples around US$262 per night for two, including taxes and fees. Its traditional setting and indoor pool access appeal to guests planning time off the train; parking is approximately US$22 nightly. Compare breakfast, station transfers, and any included local transport benefits for your exact dates. The room-price difference alone may be less important than what you will use during the stay.

Enjoy the Moving View

Keep your camera ready for scenic sections, then put it down occasionally. Holding the lens near the glass and avoiding flash helps reduce window reflections. Respect other passengers' space; missing one photograph does not mean missing the experience.

Carry water and a simple snack, and store larger bags in the designated space. Take the identification needed for the border crossing into Italy if Tirano is on your itinerary. Leave enough time there to stretch your legs or eat before returning, rather than turning an enjoyable rail day into a sequence of tight connections.

For uninterrupted scenery, choose the panoramic ride; for time beside the lake, give regional trains a closer look. Either approach works better when the route reflects how you want to spend the day, not simply how many stations you can cover.
